High School Concerto Competition

Concerto Competition Rules of Eligibility:

1. Auditionee must attend a high school in Maine or New Hampshire.

 

2. The competition is open to high school students who perform on piano, guitar, percussion, brass, or woodwind instruments.

 

3. Applicant must perform a single movement of a concerto that has a published arrangement for band instrumentation. The band arrangement must be available for purchase or rental by the Strafford Wind Symphony for the June 6th Spring Concert.

 

4. Auditionee will submit an audition performance of the selected piece on video (mp4 format) by Monday, March 2, 2020.

 

5. Finalist auditionees will perform with their own accompanist (required) on Sunday, March 29, 2020, at Rochester Performing Arts Center, Rochester, NH for the finals audition before a live audience.

 

6. Auditionee must provide two piano accompaniment scores for the finals judging panel at the time of the competition. Photocopies are not acceptable (unless selection is in the public domain).

 

7. Auditionee must be available for the finals audition, Sunday, March 29, 2020, for any assigned time slot between 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The time slot notification will be emailed to the auditionee by Wednesday, March 18, 2020.

 

8. The finalist must be able to attend the following rehearsals: May 6, 13, and 20, 7:00 p.m., Rochester Middle School, Rochester, NH; dress rehearsal, Wednesday, June 3, 7:00–9:00 p.m., location to be announced; additional rehearsals if needed. The concert date is Saturday, June 6, 2020, Rochester Opera House, 7:00 p.m., with sound check at 5:30 p.m.

 

9. The finalist must perform the selection with the Strafford Wind Symphony on June 6, 2020, and will receive a full scholarship to the University of New Hampshire Summer Youth Music School (SYMS) or equal payment toward a summer music program of their choice.

 

10. Auditionees enrolled in their school districts’ financial aid programs may request assistance in paying for an accompanist.

Please submit all materials no later than Monday, March 2, 2020. Below is a checklist for your convenience:

___ Email a video (mp4 format) of you performing the selection you intend to perform at the Strafford Wind Symphony’s June 6th concert. Performing with an accompanist in the audition video is preferred. Email to jswolfeboronh@gmail.com no later than Monday, March 2, 2020.

 

___ Email a signed Application Form to jswolfeboronh@gmail.com no later than Monday, March 2, 2020.

 

___ Mail a sealed letter of recommendation from your current high school band director to Jeffrey Smith—SWS Artistic Director, 725 Pleasant Valley Road, Wolfeboro, NH 03894 no later than Monday, March 2, 2020.

 

___ Secure an accompanist. Please note that the auditionee is responsible for securing and paying for the accompanist. Auditionees enrolled in their school districts’ financial aid programs may request assistance in paying for an accompanist.

Send completed forms and attachments no later than Monday, March 2, 2020.
